Fall is Coming and the Bite is On!

As the weather changes and the days grow shorter, many people assume that fishing slows down. But here in Tampa Bay, fall is actually one of the best times of year to fish! The cooler temperatures bring in a variety of species, from snapper and grouper to redfish and permit. And with the increased activity comes plenty of opportunity for a great catch. So break out your rod and reel and enjoy some of the best fishing of the year!

What to Expect in the Fall

Inshore, you can expect to find redfish, snook, trout, tarpon, and more. All of these fish are hungry this time of year as they fatten up for the cooler months ahead. Live bait will always be your best bet this time of year, but artificials can also be effective.

One of the great things about fishing in Tampa Bay in the fall is that there are fewer crowds. This time of year, people are less motivated to get on the water due to the chillier climate, but this is Florida! Throw on a jacket if you must and you can enjoy all that our area has to offer without having to fight for a spot on the water. So get out there and enjoy it!

Fall Tips and Techniques

As the water begins to cool off, fish will move into shallower areas in search of warmth. As a result, you’ll want to focus your efforts on areas like flats, mangrove shorelines, and seagrass beds. Redfish will often be found tailing in these shallow areas as they feed on crabs and shrimp.

For snook, look for them around docks, piers, and bridges where they’ll be congregating in large numbers. Trout will also be moving into shallower water this time of year and can be found around grass flats and oyster bars.

Tarpon fishing usually slows down a bit in the fall as these fish begin their migration south. However, there are still some around and they can be found near channels, passes, and reefs.

“Our group had a blast with Capt. Casey. The boat was comfortable and had plenty of room to accommodate our group of 5. Very knowedgable, very friendly and great fisherman. The redfish and trout where great for dinner.”
